2011 saw the launch of the DESMOND Newly Diagnosed module in Western Australia, in conjunction with Diabetes Western Australia (WA), since then the roll-out has gone from strength to strength.
Since 2011 50 Educators from Western Australia have been trained to deliver the DESMOND Newly Diagnosed module, with many progressing along the QD pathway through a remote process of quality development.
May 2012 saw the introduction of our prevention module, Walking Away from Diabetes, allowing the team to deliver education courses to those at risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
Since training as Educators in 2011, 561 participants have attended DESMOND education courses across metropolitan and rural areas in and around Perth, Western Australia. The courses have been really well received by those attending, with comments such as;
"DESMOND is an exceptional programme and I hope to see more of DESMOND in the future. Thank you for bringing DESMOND to WA"
"This is just what I needed - I have learned so much and feel so positive now"
"...was good to be with other people that have been diagnosed like me..."
Early this year (April 2013) two members of our National Training team went out to Australia to train some of the original Australian Educators to become the DESMOND Australia Training and Assessing team, this was a huge success. The team have since trained 21 new Educators and will be traveling to Tasmania in late August to further the vision to roll-out the DESMOND Programme across other States and Territories of Australia.
