A specialised mental health educational weight management programme is being developed based on the DESMOND philosophy.
STEPWISE is for people with schizophrenia or first-episode psychosis. It aims to enable people to self-manage their weight.
The team behind DESMOND at the Leicester Diabetes Centre is responsible for the new education programme and are training facilitators to deliver it in ten community settings across the UK.
Alison Northern, Project Support Manager at the Centre, said: “We are now using the best practice in self-management developed in the DESMOND programme for people with long-term conditions other than diabetes. It’s so satisfying to see how people respond to our way of supporting them.”
The project is being led by the University of Sheffield and the University of Southampton.
